I began coloring as soon as I could hold a crayon. It became a family joke that after a while my parents could not come up with a coloring book that I had not already colored from cover to cover.
I vividly remember the disappointment I felt one season when I saw all of the new Christmas coloring/activity books out on the store shelves. I saw the new covers! I was so excited to see what was inside. I eagerly opened them to find the same pictures that I had colored year after year. They had changed the covers, but still were using the same old books inside. I was actually angry. Surely, I thought, SOMEONE could have come up with something new. It couldn’t be that difficult!
I remember the smell of crayons, the feel of crayons, the way the day passed in a blur when I used my crayons. I feel for my sister, Sara, for I remember she worked hard to get those crayons in “color order” and was determined that I should put them back in just the right spot. I didn’t comply. I simply couldn’t. I imagine that after that day we both had our own box.
As a child I loved writing letters, entering writing contests, playing sports, and reading. I knew that someday I would love to draw but could not get my hands to do what I could see in my head. My art opportunity came when I decided to try out a new school in Loveland, Colorado. There I lived with my aunt and uncle and attended Campion Academy. And there I learned how to draw. My teacher, Sue Kanen, unlocked my creative bent. By the end of my sophomore year I could draw what I saw in life and would begin to express my own artistic voice. I sold work and won awards. I continued to take art at Campion Academy for two more years and then gleaned from art courses at several colleges and universities as the years went by.
As an adult I love to draw and paint but I have never out grown coloring. Now I have three boys of my own to color with. I paint and cut and color with my own art students as well. The coloring pages on this site come from the Sabbath School class that I teach each week. They come from my love of teaching the word of God and my desire to have children engaged in the creative process. We learn about our Creator when we create!
Enjoy these pages. I illustrate the things I love. I often add a Scottish Terrier to my pictures. (I grew up with two, Dusty and Schooner. Now I own the dizziest Scotty of all named Isabelle.) You will also notice that I hide a heart in each picture that I draw. Sometimes my kids (Nathan, Luke and Seth) and husband (Alan) pose for my pictures and I make them into a rabbit, a bobcat, or maybe a frog. What animal would you choose to be? I picked a raccoon to be me!
